If you expect to give birth at a hospital or other birthing center, it is wise to prepare for your stay by packing well in advance.  Here are some suggestions about what to take

Nightgowns, although you may choose to wear the ones the hospital provides to avoid staining your own.  Bring front-opening gowns if you plan to breastfeed.
Nursing bras and breast pads.
Panties that you won’t mind throwing away if they become stained
Robe and slippers
Toiletry bag including toothbrush, toothpaste, deodorant, soap, hairbrush, shampoo, make-up
Sanitary pads
Loose-fitting clothes for going home. Since your abdomen will probably be swollen and tender, a maternity outfit may be your most comfortable choice.
A small amount of cash

Your birth plan
Old nightgown or t-shirt for giving birth
Vaseline and lip balm
Lotion or massage oil
Socks
Watch or clock with second hand for timing contractions
Radio or CD/tape player
Camera and/or video equipment
Snacks for Dad (You don't want your labor coach to get too hungry!)
Your address book or a phone list of people to call when baby arrives

2 sleep suits
2 undershits
3 diapers
Light-weight sweater, coat, hat, and socks for the journey home
Baby blanket
Car seat (you might not be allowed to take your baby home in a car without one!)
